Model United Nations Conferences

Due to the recent circumstances with Covid-19, Highline College has suspended participation in the Model UN program.

Model United Nations (Model UN) Conferences are held all throughout the world. Participation in a Model United Nations Conference provides a unique opportunity for students to learn about international relations and the work of the UN, develop professional skills, interact with college students from other regions, and practice negotiation skills.

Students participating in Model UN must commit to being at the conference for the entire duration, learning and operating in parliamentary procedure, regularly attending preparatory meetings (through the class or club), and submitting required writing assignments to participate in the conference. Students become eligible to participate in the club after they have participated in at least one conference through the Model UN course.

At the conference, each student will represent a specific nation to a committee that works on agreements to solve the greatest challenges the international community is facing today. While there are no costs associated with participating in the conferences on behalf of Highline College, students will be required to arrange their own transport to Seattle and professional attire is required for all conferences.

Model UN Conference space is limited. Be sure to check out the class requirements for each conference. You can view class offerings on the Highline Class Schedule. Each year Highline participates in the following:

NWMUN Conference in Seattle, Fall quarter

Covid-19 Update: Due to the current circumstances with Covid-19, Highline College has suspended participation in the Model UN program.

Students can participate in the Model UN Conference held each November in Seattle by either participating in the weekly International Relations Club or by taking POL S 103 Model United Nations: Institutions or DGS 103 Model United Nations: Institutions at Highline in the fall.

These courses explore the role of the United Nations and the impact it has on the world. Covers the theory and practice of UN institutions and the current challenges the organization is attempting to address. Includes participation in a Model UN Conference.

NWMUN Conference in Portland, Winter quarter

Covid-19 Update: Due to the current circumstances with Covid-19, Highline College has suspended participation in the Model UN program.

Students can participate in the Model UN Conference each February in Portland by taking POL S 104 – Model United Nations: Development or DGS 104 – Model United Nations: Development at Highline during the winter quarter.

These courses examine the role of the United Nations, with a particular focus on contributions to international development and the impact it has on society. Covers the theory and practice of development work within political systems. Includes participation in the Model UN Conference.

Model UN Club

Once students have participated in a MUN Conference, they are eligible to participate in the MUN Club. This club meets every week for an hour and a half to discuss international relations ad prepare for upcoming conferences.
