Are you ready to take your teaching beyond the classroom and into the global arena? The Highline College Faculty Experiential Learning to Japan 2026 program offers faculty an opportunity to experience Japan’s rich culture, history, and educational practices firsthand — while developing new perspectives to enhance your curriculum and engage your students.

This is Highline College’s inaugural faculty trip to Japan, designed to help participants explore the intersection of tradition and innovation through immersive learning and collaboration.

Program Overview

The Japan 2026 program connects Highline College faculty with global educators and local communities across Japan. Through pre-departure workshops and on-site activities, participants will deepen their cultural understanding and bring new global insights back to the classroom.

What to Expect

Pre-Trip Workshops (Fall & Winter 2025):
Participants will attend pre-departure workshops focused on Japanese culture, history, communication, and educational systems.

On-Site in Japan (March 2026):
Experience Japan through guided site visits, academic exchanges, and cultural excursions that highlight both traditional and modern aspects of Japanese society.

During your time abroad, you’ll:

  • Engage with Japanese faculty, institutions, and local leaders
  • Explore cultural landmarks and educational organizations
  • Reflect on global perspectives to enhance student learning at Highline College

What’s Included

For approximately $3,600, the program covers:

  • Round-trip airfare (Seattle ⇄ Japan)
  • Domestic airfare within Japan
  • Ground transportation and rail passes
  • 8 nights of hotel accommodations (single occupancy)
  • Group meals and organized excursions
  • All planned workshops and cultural experiences

Who Should Apply

This program is open to all Highline College faculty — full-time, part-time, and one-year lecturers — who are passionate about international education and want to incorporate global perspectives into their teaching.

Applicants must be willing to apply their annual professional development allotment plus give-back funds toward the program cost.

No prior travel experience is required — just a commitment to learning, sharing, and engaging across cultures.
